Photography
The MCS photography class begins by exploring how the perfect shot involves both an artistic eye and scientific knowledge. This elective class helps students become well-rounded in the fundamental basics of digital photography.
Four areas of instruction are emphasized over the course of one semester:
- How cameras work
- How composition works
- How lighting works
- How to use photo editing software
Students explore techniques and past historical references with (3) core research projects. Students will research artists, demonstrate techniques based off classroom instruction, and view samples of desired results. Shooting assignments are primarily held outside utilizing natural lighting for the perfect shots.
A useful part of classroom instruction involves weekly reviews and practical critiques of photos assignments by their teacher and peers. Students will be asked to produce an online portfolio of images as a final project. This can be used outside of the classwork to demonstrate skill sets and aptitude in their professional or academic careers.
At the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate:
- The use of various features of the camera to creatively control photographs
- What type of lighting should be used in a given situation to produce optimal results
- How photographic composition can make or break a photograph
- The use of photo editing software to improve the overall appearance of images
