A Message from the Head of School

Dear MCS Families,

Our mission states that our goal is "to partner with parents and churches to lead students toward God..." In doing so, I'd like to share a couple upcoming events:

Fireside Chat: Thank you to those who stopped by our first Coffee Chat. This monthly opportunity will now be held in the Madison Christian Church Fireside Room, so we are changing the name to Fireside Chat. Parents/guardians are invited to stop by the Fireside Room after morning drop-off on Friday, October 7th for a cup of coffee and to connect with school administrators.

Parenting Retreat: Keith McCurdy will be back on campus to conduct a 6-Hour Parenting Retreat on Friday, October 28th from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, October 29th from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Madison Christian Church. The retreat will help parents focus on the basics of healthy parenting by learning to approach parenting form the paradigm that most children are "normal" and in need of a common foundation of direction and training. 

Topics discussed will include:

• The difference between "normal" and "abnormal" childhood
• The correct role of emotions
• Understanding "emotional disordering"
• Learning how to allow your child(ren) to struggle in healthy ways
• Appropriate burdens, responsibilities, and limits for children
• Answering "What is the goal of parenting?"
• What does it really mean to "impress" Truth (Deuteronomy 6:7) and "train up" (Proverbs 22"6) a child

The cost for the retreat will be $29 per seat or $50 per couple. A registration link will be sent out as the event gets closer. Learn more about Keith McCurdy.

Primary and Elementary News

Our Elementary students have had a great time participating in MCYAL Cross Country and Volleyball. We have about 25 girls in 3rd-5th in volleyball and over 80 K-5th students in cross country! This is a great opportunity for our students to learn the skills and sportsmanship of sports and how to share God's love on and off the field. 

Our 5th-graders have really enjoyed participating in band. We have over 40 students in 5th grade who have chosen to learn to play a new instrument this year. Under the direction of Mr. Klinger, these students will be playing songs before we know it! Great job 5th-graders!

One of our kindergarten classes had a special secret they had to figure out recently. Mrs. Knauss's class was challenged to unscramble a puzzle to reveal her special surprise... Mrs. Knauss is having a baby!

October 17th-20th: Parent-Teacher Conferences in the evenings by appointment made with the teacher.

Middle School News

We are really enjoying our MS chapels! We love worshipping and learning from God's word together. We have now started meeting in small groups (huddles) following the message. This is a great time to discuss what we've learned with fiends and staff. Parents can further discuss what we've talked about using the Parent Cue app.

We had a fun retreat day on September 14th, finishing our Middle School Retreat activities and looking at how each of us are "one of a kind". Students listened to Miss Miller in chapel, talked together in their huddles, created a tie dye t-shirt, had pizza and Kona Ice, and played many fun games. 

On September 30th, the Middle School is closed so that teachers can move into the new building! We are so excited about the building God has provided and can't wait to make many amazing memories in our new space.

High School News

September Academic Trips:

• 9th & 10th grade visited Gettysburg and Washington, D.C., taking in many of the museums, memorials, and other historic landmarks. The tour guide led the group in reflections on humility, courage, perseverance, self-sacrifice, and other virtues demonstrated by the people commemorated there.
• 11th grade experienced a 3-day immersion that exposed them to sacrificial service and living life in full view of eternity. They visited the National Veterans Memorial and Museum and served at the Center of Hope and the Mid-Ohio Food Collective. At the end of each day, students had times of reflection that searched for how the experiences impacted them.
• 12th grade enjoyed a 4-day adventure to Arizona. They climbed the rock formations at Papago Park, explored the beautiful Red Rock State Park, hiked the trails to see the Native American cliff dwellings at Walnut Canyon National Monument, and culminated the trip with a visit to Grand Canyon National Park.

October 12th: Senior Breakfast - A student/parent meeting will take place immediately after breakfast, which will include a presentation from Josten's. Senior parents, please RSVP via the link in the email invite and send baby/growing up photos to Mrs. Hollopeter ([email protected]) by October 7th.

November 11th: Fall Event - 9th-12th graders, save the date for a special event. More info coming soon.

Academic Trips 2023: Info about next year's class trips in September 2023 will be coming out soon.

Guidance Office

Senior Meetings: These individual meetings are in progress to discuss graduation requirements, test scores, and college planning with Mrs. Ladd and Mr. Slonaker.

Testing for Grades 9-11: Students will participate in the following standardized tests on October 12th. Grade 9: Pre-ACT 8/9, Grade 10: Pre-ACT, Grade 11: PSAT. Students will receive information applicable to their specific test during homeroom visits from Mrs. Ladd in the next couple weeks. Information is also available online, which may include practice questions/tests.

College Visits: Seniors have up to 5 excused absences for in-person college visits. This number also includes needed travel days. Juniors may have 2 days for excused college visits. Please bring a business card from the college to the HS office upon return as a visit verification.

Service Hours: It's never too early to begin serving others! Yearly service hour requirements are Grades 7-9: 10 hours, Grade 10: 20 hours, Grade 11: 30 hours, and Grade 12: 40 hours. Hours should be logged using documentation sheets located in the hallway across from the HS office. It is encouraged your child turns in service logs to their Bible teacher at the end of each 9-week grading period. This enables their progress toward the yearly requirement to be viewed on each report card throughout the year! Please refer to the MCS Parent/Student Handbook for more details.

FAFSA 2023: Application window for the 2023-24 school year opens on October 1. Visit studentaid.gov to learn more.

ACT/SAT: Students interested in taking these tests should visit ACT.org or SAT.org for test dates, registration, and practice opportunities.

Senior/Juniors: Stay active in college and scholarship searches. Create spreadsheets to help you organize information regarding deadlines, application requirements, and notes. Please schedule an appointment with Mrs. Ladd if you have questions or need assistance.

College/University Application Window: Colleges and universities began accepting applications for the 2023-24 school year on August 1. Seniors should keep a spreadsheet of application requirements for each school. Please see Mrs. Ladd if you have any questions about the application process.
