5th graders experience Ohio history

This year, 5th grade students have been learning about Ohio History. They recently enjoyed a morning tour of the Ohio Statehouse where they learned about the history of the Statehouse building, had a chance to view the Ohio Constitution, as well as sit in the gallery seating of the House Chamber and the Senate Chamber.

In the afternoon, the students learned more about the Underground Railroad in central Ohio with a visit to the The Kelton House Museum & Garden. The Kelton House allowed students to travel back in time and hear from an actor portraying the homeowner, Mrs. Sophia Kelton. She shared details about the challenges her family faced as conductors on the Underground Railroad. She also spoke about some hardships faced by the runaways making their way to freedom in Canada. While at the Kelton House, the students also learned about the life of the Kelton Family by touring the house and seeing many furnishings that were used by the Kelton Family in the late 1800's.
